Sports Management BSc (Hons)

Course overview

You can still apply to BU (including through UCAS Extra). Please apply through UCAS as soon as possible; your application can only be assessed once we have received it from UCAS.

The number of graduates entering the sports industry is increasing. Potential employers are looking more and more towards vocational expertise and experience to complement academic qualifications.

Our Sports Management degree at Bournemouth University is specifically designed to address this issue with the third year of the course being spent on an industrial placement in the sporting industry. This placement will give you the opportunity to gain the industrial experience and relevant sporting skills that employers are seeking from today's graduates.

Our graduate employment rate is currently in excess of 90%, which means that 9 out of every 10 of our graduates have gained employment in appropriate career positions within 6 months of graduation. It is clear that employers value the industrial placement and therefore, the four year course of study, offered at Bournemouth University.

The major limitation with some degree courses currently offered in sports related disciplines is that they do not reflect the employment opportunities available in the areas of sports and leisure management on raduation. This degree was developed after extensive consultation with industry and concentrates upon sports management and business management, the areas identified by industry as requiring well-qualified graduates.

The structure of the course was developed following discussion with specific organisations including UK Sport, Sport England, the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management, sporting National Governing Bodies and both local and nationally recognised health and fitness clubs in the Dorset area.

As well as the industrial placement, our students also experience sport practicum in Level C and applied leisure research in Level H during which they develop their skills in sports management environments. Our students, therefore, graduate with an academic degree, a range of specific vocational experiences and the key personal skills required to excel in employment.

The course focuses upon two major themes sports management and development. We will help you to develop your skills in sports management environments so that you leave us not only with a graduate degree but with practical experiences and the key personl skills required to excel in employment.
