Course content

Year 1 - Level C

This year ensures that all students develop a solid foundation in core subjects relevant to the sports industry. A wide variety of subjects will be covered to ensure you understand the wider sporting context.

  • Sport Context

You will develop an understanding of the nature, significance, organisation and development of the industry in contemporary society. Knowledge of both the theoretical principles and practical factors affecting the sports industry will be developed, including a national and international perspective

  • Financial reporting

It’s important that you understand the financial reporting structure of organisations. The unit aims to provide you with an introduction to the techniques involved in the recording and reporting of financial information in a small business, sports club or society.

  • Marketing for sport

Throughout this unit you look at the role of marketing, devise marketing strategies and implementation plans whilst taking the internal and external environment into consideration.

  • Operations Management

The unit will concentrate upon the practical management of sports facilities including the nature, content and application of operational ideas relevant to sports management. You will be introduced to the importance of planning and resourcing within the role of a sports manager.

  • Applied Health & Fitness

This unit provides you with an understanding of the role of the health and fitness industry in improving public health. It allows you to appreciate the need to adopt a client-centred approach when working in the health and fitness industry.


Year 2 - Level I

This year looks to develop more subject specific knowledge and the tools required to work effectively during your industrial placement experience in Year Three.

  • People & Performance

Developing awareness and understanding of the complexities associated with managing people.

  • Research Methods

Focusing on quantitative and qualitative research that will enable students to prepare and interpret data for business and research projects thus providing a sound basis for decision-taking. This unit will also help you analyse aspects of your placement experience, perhaps in preparation for your final year dissertation.

  • Consumer Experience & Behaviour

Developing a critical understanding of the individual and social processes underlying and influencing human behaviour, particularly as this relates to people as consumers. You will develop the ability to evaluate and apply theories, concepts and models of consumer behaviour including segmentation, consumer profiling, communication and positioning.

  • Events Management in Sport

Working as part of a group, you will plan and execute an event within a specific time frame, drawing on principles of customer experience and critically evaluating the event success.

  • Sport Development, Organisation & Governance

This unit is designed to provide you with an understanding of the framework for sports development in the UK . The unit will analyse the implications of government policy on sports provision, participation and performance.

  • Financial Appraisal for Sport

The unit aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge to facilitate effective planning, monitoring and control mechanisms in the sport sector. To enable you to develop short and medium term strategic decision making skills that are defined by clear financial criteria.


Year 3

Placement Minimum 40 weeks paid industrial placement - UK/Overseas opportunities

The third year of this course is spent on industrial placement. Placements are varied, reflecting the diverse interests of our students and can take place within the UK or overseas. You will be encouraged during the first two years of the course to develop an area of interest which will be reflected in the type of placement they decide to take up in the third year. Possible overseas locations for the placement include Spain , Portugal , Australia , Europe (notably France and Germany ) and North America . The Centre for Sports Management has excellent links with sporting organisations, health and fitness clubs and national governing bodies in both the UK and Australia , including Sport England, UK Sport, David Lloyd, Fitness First, Holmes Place and the Australian Institute of Sport. Links also exist with a number of European sporting organisations and their counterparts in North America . Many students do decide to remain in the UK for their placement.


Year 4 - Level H

In the final year students have the opportunity to develop and merge their academic and industrial skills and may select one option unit moulding the final year to their own areas of interest.

  • Dissertation

The dissertation is a major piece of research work and your choice of dissertation subject should reflect an area of particular interest – perhaps an aspect of the industry related to your placement experience. Your dissertation will be individually supervised by a member of our teaching team, usually an academic with a particular interest in your chosen subject

  • Strategy & Leadership

Understanding the role and function of leadership and the different approaches and theories. Plus the internal and external factors that contribute to developing strategic options .

  • Global Perspectives in Sport

This unit provides you with the opportunity to further develop an awareness and understanding of the complexities of Global Sport. The unit will also explore the extent to which contemporary sport cultures are the result of interactions between local and global forces.

  • Consultancy Project

The unit allows you to work in groups directly with an industrial partner in the completion of a ‘real’ consultancy project. You will be required to liaise with academic and industry staff in order to develop your professional skills.
