Prehistoric and Roman Archaeology BA (Hons)

Fieldwork

Archaeology students at the Big Dig

This course offers substantial fieldwork opportunities including one-day visits to both individual sites and significant landscapes of international archaeological interest. The intensive 25-day field school at the end of the first year regularly attracts much media interest, featuring, in 2010 and 2011, on the BBC’s highly acclaimed series ‘Digging for Britain’. Read the 2011 big dig diary on our blog site.

The field school, fieldtrips and training days allow you to develop a wide range of field archaeological skills including prospection, excavation, earthwork survey, geophysical survey, context recording, soil description and interpretation, site safety and management, environmental sampling, photography and the interpretation of the excavated evidence.

All fieldwork that is part of a credit-rated unit, with the exception of research projects, is included in your course fees. Overseas fieldwork is not included in your fees, but we do provide travel bursaries each year to support you to gain such valuable experience. Fieldwork provides an opportunity for you to consolidate your learning through practical application.
