What will I study?

This course focuses on preparing you for a career in archaeology, concentrating on professional training and providing you with a detailed and critical understanding of current themes in prehistoric and Roman archaeology.

Concentrating upon the archaeological remains and material culture of Western Europe from the Neolithic through to the 5th Century AD, this course is underpinned by a strong focus on practical field archaeological skills. Key components of the course encompass artefact analysis, the study of human and animal remains, religious and ritual practice, military studies, urban development, trade and exchange, industrial processes, cultural change and globalisation.

This course will appeal to students seeking to use a background or interest in the past, the course maps a path directly from existing A-Level courses in Archaeology, Art History, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History. With an emphasis on practical learning, this course combines taught lectures and seminar work with fieldwork upon a series of newly discovered archaeological sites.

Bournemouth is ideally situated, with some of Britain's most iconic prehistoric and Roman sites, such as Stonehenge, Avebury, Dorchester, Maiden Castle and Fishbourne, all within easy traveling distance. You will have the opportunity to gain high quality work experience with placements on archaeological excavations throughout the UK and abroad. Recent archaeology students have participated in projects as far afield as the USA, Greece, Sicily and Russia.
