Industrial Design BA (Hons)

Course overview

This course has been accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED).

Industrial Design is a continuing process for improving the quality of everyday life. A career in this exciting area could see you designing anything from a tea pot to a space rocket.

This course will equip you to become a flexible designer, able to apply yourself to many different design roles. Throughout this course the emphasis is on user-centred design issues, aesthetics, ergonomics, interaction design, commercial design, as well as design for industrial manufacture and production. Students will use digital media and computer design visualisation tools throughout the design process.

Strong industry links and an optional work placement will enhance your employment prospects. We strongly encourage students to take a work placement, as it is invaluable in helping to make an informed decision about your future career pathway. Students are supported throughout the placement experience, and are assisted in finding a placement, as well as given advice and techniques on how to perform well at interviews. Past placements have taken place both in the UK and abroad. Placements have included companies such as Jaguar Cars Ltd, Xerox, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd, Dyson Appliances Ltd and The Gillette Company.

Graduates from this course will be equipped to enter careers in industrial product design, visual media and graphics, furniture and interior design, marketing and commercial design, and packaging design and branding.
