Games Technology BSc (Hons)

Hear from current students

Pete Allen is a current student studying BSc (Hons) Games Technology.

I wanted to change my career to videogame development rather than CAD, which is what I was doing before. Bournemouth offered the exact type of course I was looking for and it’s on the south coast, which is an important factor for me. The best thing about my course has been learning the different skills like modelling, coding, level design – and being asked to demonstrate them through assignments. Also, all the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

My favourite thing about living in Bournemouth is the beach and surrounding areas in summer as it’s a place where I can use some creative and technical skills to produce something good which will be useful for my personal portfolio. I have had a very good experience so far, I have learned and sharpened my skills which are relevant to the games industry and had a great summer here too.

Dave Springer: "My main reason for doing a degree is because I knew I wanted to be a part of the Games Industry but did not know what role I would like or how to achieve it. I chose BU for its facilities and location, the course was the most specific and relevant course to my interest.

The best thing about the course is the variety of software packages we've been taught to use and seeing a finished piece of work at a standard I didn't think I was capable of.

Aside from the academic benefits the social ones are great too. I've made lots of new friends and have made memories I'll hold on to for a long time. "

Chris Ramsey: "I chose Bournemouth University because I was told by my college tutors that it was a very good university for the course I wanted to take. BU was also in a nice location for me. I hoped that BU would teach me the skills I needed to develop computer games, and to help me go into a software career in general. I was hoping that the programming skills taught, even though they were specific to game development, would also help me in a more generalised software career.

I am currently on my work placement at IBM. I am having a fantastic time and have learnt so much already. I was expecting to get technical and programming knowledge out of this placement but I feel I have got far much more. My work placement has showed me how the real working world works, how to work as part of a team, with regards to software development and has also helped me become more independent. Being on a sandwich degree course has given me a chance to work at one of the world's top technology companies which will significantly improve my future prospects. I am very optimistic about my final year and hope to do well which I believe the placement year will help me achieve".
