Forensic Science Fieldwork

You can still apply to BU (including through UCAS Extra). Please apply through UCAS as soon as possible; your application can only be assessed once we have received it from UCAS.

This course is delivered at Weymouth College in Dorset, a BU Partner College

The rise in the use of forensic sciences by court systems in the developed world marks a shift away from reliance upon witness testimony. The need for appropriately trained staff by such central organisations as the Forensic Sciences Service is increasing.

This course is intended to appeal to students with interests in investigative science involving legal issues, crime scene science, chemistry and molecular biology. Analytical laboratory research is a key aspect of the course. The Foundation degree in Forensic Science will enable students to develop an understanding of how forensic evidence is gathered for use in laboratory work.

In the first year, students will develop the practical skills involved in laboratory work including safety and legal issues, data manipulation, chemical and biological techniques. Emphasis is also placed on research and study skills to encourage independent learning and enable students to develop critical and analytical minds. In the second year, students will work on specific forensic case studies and improve their management skills in planning and organising examples of forensic evidence.

The course is designed for students who wish to establish a career in forensic science such as Forensic Laboratory Technician or Scene of Crime Officer. In addition to the Forensic work, the Foundation degree equips students with a range of essential skills which would support a variety of careers within or outside of the science sector.
