Child Health Nursing BSc (Hons)

Course overview

Child using respirator

Closed for applications for 2012 entry.

The course is designed to prepare you to meet the needs of children/young people and their family and to view the patient as a unique individual who has the right to receive health and nursing care of the highest quality based on best evidence, delivered in a safe and appropriate environment.

Many national reports emphasise that working with and caring for children and young people demands specialist knowledge and skills. This is because the needs of the child and young person vary according to age, growth and stage of development.

The needs of children, young people and their families are not only related to the science of nursing such as physical and technical factors but also to the art of nursing which incorporates psychological, social, emotional, cultural, spiritual beliefs, respect for diversity and gender issues and humanistic caring activities.

It is essential that those working with children and young people know and understand the differences between working with / caring for a premature baby, a neonate (under 4 weeks), an infant, a toddler, a pre-school child, a school aged child and an adolescent.

All will have distinct and different needs and each should be regarded as an individual with rights.

On successful completion of the course you will also achieve professional registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
