Course overview

You can still apply to BU (including through UCAS Extra ). Please apply through UCAS as soon as possible; your application can only be assessed once we have received it from UCAS.

This course is delivered at Kingston Maurward College in Dorchester.

This qualification will enable you to acquire, within a range of settings, the specialist technical skills and knowledge that are demanded by the animal care industry.

Specialist careers in every aspect of the animal care and conservation industries have seen rapid expansion in recent years. This is due to a developing global interest in all aspects of animal welfare and the associated study of behaviour, not least as an assessment index. In turn, this has generated a demand for suitably qualified people who can demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge together with the applied skills needed to pursue a career in a highly competitive market. This course will help you to become such a person.

The course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the behaviour and welfare of animals, and the organisations that care for them. It is delivered by a team of highly experienced and qualified staff actively involved in various sectors of the animal care industry. The course is presented through a combination of lectures, discussions, assignments and case history evaluation, practical activities (laboratory and fieldwork), visiting guest speakers, specialist visits and work experience.

The work placement at the end of the first year provides the opportunity to integrate theory and practice and gain valuable industry experience, with many students opting for one of the many exciting opportunities that exist with overseas organisations and conservation agencies. If you would prefer to study on a part-time basis then you can do so, with the course lasting up to six years.
