Hasan Istillozlu

MSc Maritime Archaeology student (2009-2010)

What's the best bit about this course?

The best bit about this course is the guest lectures. Specialists come in from around the world to talk to us about maritime archaeology. For example we recently had a guest lecture from a wood specialist from Italy.

What fieldwork have you been involved in?

I was involved in diving on the Swash Channel wreck, which was my first time on a real wreck. We studied the photomosaic technique and technological recording of vessels, using waterproof cameras. We then recorded the artefacts by taking photos, giving them numbers and measuring each piece.

What is your major project / dissertation about?

My project is about dating the Swash Channel shipwreck using its artefacts. I used old and new findings from the excavation site and compared and contrasted these with similar artefacts from different shipwrecks. These Swash Channel artefacts show similarities with Dutch daily life tools on the vessel. Therefore, I studied mostly Dutch shipwreck sources. In my opinion, which is similar to my course tutors, these findings show huge similarities with early 17th century Dutch shipwrecks.

What are your goals for the future?

My first choice will be a maritime archaeology job within the government, other options are available, but I will have to talk to some archaeologists to figure out any new potential work alternatives for maritime archaeology in Cyprus.
