Range of Awards Post Qualifying Social Work (Part-time)

Course overview

The Centre for Post Qualifying Social Work offers a portfolio of courses designed to raise standards in social work practice and help social workers demonstrate their competence to work within complex situations.

Our courses are part of the General Social Care Councils (GSCC) Post Qualifying Award framework and have been developed through partnerships with a variety of local authorities, voluntary and independent agencies throughout England.

Our specialist social work awards are available in the following areas:

  • Children and Families
  • Social Work with Adults
  • Leadership and Management

Each specialist social work award starts with the Consolidation and Preparation for Specialist Practice unit (formerly PQ1) and also contains the Enabling Work Based Learning unit (formerly PQ6).

Additionally there are three client specific modules for each specialist award – you must successfully complete the Consolidation and Preparation for Specialist Practice unit before moving on to complete the full specialist awards.

Specialist awards:

  • BA (Hons)/ Graduate Diploma - Vulnerable Adults / Community Care
  • BA (Hons)/ Graduate Diploma – Children and Family Studies
  • BA (Hons)/Graduate Diploma – Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care

We have also developed a Practice Education course that incorporates the Enabling Work Based Learning unit plus a further unit in Supervising a Student in Practice:

  • Graduate Certificate in Practice Assessment.

Higher Specialist Awards

Our higher specialist and advanced social work awards are available in the following areas:

  • Mental Health
  • Leadership and Management

Although the Consolidation and Preparation for Specialist Practice module (formerly PQ1) does not form part of the higher specialist award, there is an expectation that students will have completed it as a preparation before embarking on these higher levels of study. The higher specialist awards also contain a Leading and Enabling Others unit.

Higher specialist and advanced awards:

  • Postgraduate Diploma/Masters - Advanced Mental Health Practice
  • Postgraduate Diploma/Masters - Leading and Developing Services

Individual units of study

Within the PQSW framework there is some professional validation that can be taken as freestanding continuous professional development units.

These include:

  • Consolidating NQSW Practice
  • Best Interest Assessor
  • Risk and Decision Making in Practice

Links to all courses detailed above can be found on our PQSW course listing page.
