Overseas Nursing Programme

Course overview

All nurses who trained outside of the UK need to be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) in order to practice as a qualified nurse in the UK. Our course has been developed in partnership with the NMC and will provide you with the necessary conversion skills to become a registered nurse in the UK as well as in your home country.

Flexible start dates are available throughout the year - for full details take a look at our timetables - 2012 and 2013.

About the course - 20 days protected study only

This course is for students requiring unsupervised practice only. If you require a period of supervised practice in addition to the 20 protected learning, we currently cannot faciliate this - please contact the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) to get details of an alternative education provider.

The course consists of 20 days protected learning time (approx 150 hours), which everyone must take, and which will include three taught days on campus. You will complete a study guide and attend the three taught days which are supporting study sessions. There are also online resources available for you to access as well as support via email.

The study guide has been developed to meet the requirements of the NMC’s prescribed curriculum content and overall learning outcomes. and is divided into sections that contain a number of activities which you need to complete. The activities in this study guide are written in such a way to allow you to find all the information you need from the Internet. Therefore, all sections of the study guide will require you to have access to the Internet with Adobe Reader installed. This can be downloaded free if you do not already have it.

We appreciate that you are a registered practitioner in your own country and very probably have a wealth of experience in nursing, and we have tried to respect this when developing the study guide. It is not intended to ‘teach you to nurse’, rather to introduce you to the nursing environment within the UK. Some sections may be repetition of work you have already completed during your training or any post registration courses you have undertaken, but as previously identified, the NMC prescribe the programme content. Thus, where this happens we encourage you to view these topics as an update of the many important issues that underpin/relate to practice.

Following completion of your study guide, and prior to the university signing your final NMC Declaration of Good Health and Good Character form, you will be required to sit a multiple choice question test (on your final day of the course) based on the activities you will have completed in the Study Guide.
